Aughrim Thunderstorm
A Wicklow Senior Football Championship double-header was fixed for Aughrim today with the first match between local rivals Stratford-Grangecon and Baltinglass throwing in at 11.30.
At 11.00 it looked like the ideal morning for football with the sun shining and the pitch in perfect condition.
However as both teams warmed up on the pitch at 11.10, the village of Aughrim was hit by a freak thunder storm with torrential rain. Within minutes many areas of the pitch were flooded.
Referee John Keenan waited twenty minutes for the rain to ease and then consulted with management of Stratford-Grangecon and Baltinglass on the pitch. The decision to call the match off was unanimous due to a risk of player injury.
Eire-Og/Greystones v Hollywood was also postponed.
Wicklow GAA PRO Pat Mitchell said he never witnessed anything like the rain that came down in that 20 minutes.
